A 21-year-old Army Ranger from Fort Lewis was killed Memorial Day in Afghanistan, the Defense Department said Wednesday.

Spc. Christopher Gathercole of Santa Rosa, Calif., died in Ghazni of wounds after he was shot during combat.

Gathercole, who joined the Army in October 2005, served with the 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, which is based at Fort Lewis. It is one of three battalions with the regiment that is headquartered under the Army Special Operations Command at Fort Benning, Ga.

According to special-operations command, Gathercole was a light machine gunner. As a Ranger, Gathercole had earned a combat infantryman badge, a parachutist badge and the Ranger Tab, Army officials said.

Gathercole is survived by his father, Edward R. Gathercole of Santa Rosa; his mother, Catherine Haines of Fairfield; and a brother, Edward F. Gathercole, also of Santa Rosa.

To date, 21 members of the armed forces with local connections have been killed in the last seven years while serving in Afghanistan. Nationwide, at least 436 members of the U.S. armed forces have been killed there since the U.S. invasion following the 9/11 terror attacks.
